Company Profile

Company Overview

With a proud history of more than six decades, Kaiser Permanente is the country’s largest not-for-profit health maintenance organization with approximately $40 billion in annual revenue. Founded in 1945, the company has grown from a 12-bed hospital into a leading integrated health delivery system that serves nearly 8.7 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. Today, Kaiser Permanente is nationally and internationally recognized for providing innovative, high-quality, evidence-based healthcare through the advantages of its integrated insurance and care delivery infrastructure.

More than 160,000 healthcare professionals, nurses and physicians serve the healthcare needs of members and communities in eight Kaiser Permanente Regions covering Northern California, Southern California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Ohio, Northwest (Oregon and Washington), and Mid-Atlantic States (Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia). Kaiser Permanente health plan members receive their care primarily through Kaiser Permanente-owned and operated hospitals and medical clinics, which are staffed by roughly 14,000 physicians of the Permanente Medical Groups. To augment our coverage, we provide some of our services through contracted networks of community hospitals, physicians and other providers.

Our eight Regions are comprised of separate but closely cooperating organizations:

• Kaiser Foundation Health Plans (KFHP): A non-profit, public-benefit corporation that contracts with individuals and groups to provide HMO and other health benefit plans. KFHP contracts with Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and the Permanente Medical Groups to provide services.

• Kaiser Foundation Hospitals (KFH): A non-profit, public-benefit corporation that owns and operates hospitals in California, Oregon, and Hawaii; owns outpatient facilities in all states where they do business; provides or arranges hospital services; and sponsors charitable, educational and research activities.

• Permanente Medical Groups (PMG): Partnerships or professional corporations of physicians, with one in each Kaiser Permanente Region. The PMG is responsible for providing and arranging all medical care and services in each of our Regions.

Kaiser Permanente has a long-standing and strong commitment to its employees and to organized labor. We also have a unique National Labor-Management Partnership that includes eight international union partners and 30 local union partners representing more than 70,000 KP employees. The Labor-Management Partnership provides an opportunity for the unions and Kaiser Permanente management to unite around common purposes and work together to deliver high-quality medical care in an increasingly competitive healthcare environment.

Leveraging its integrated care delivery system, new tools and technology, Kaiser Permanente is taking preventive, proactive, and chronic care to a new level, resulting in better care, better health and more convenient access at an affordable cost.
