Company History

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, INC. ORGANIZED IN 1913: The American Cancer Society, Inc., organized in 1913 as the American Society for the Control of Cancer, is a voluntary association of people united to prevent cancer and reduce its effects. It is one of the oldest and largest voluntary health agencies in the United States, with over two million Americans united to conquer cancer through balanced programs of research, education, advocacy and service. The Society, with national headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, is composed of chartered divisions throughout the country. Within these divisions are more than 3,400 local units. All are engaged in a comprehensive program to conquer cancer.


ILLINOIS DIVISION, ORGANIZED IN 1946 The Illinois Division was chartered by the National Society and incorporated in Illinois on September 4, 1946. The Division has operating units in all 102 counties of the state. It is through the units and elements thereof that the Society's programs are translated into action. Staff are employed to assist in carrying out the policies and programs established by the volunteers.
