Horizon Utilities is one of Canada’s leading electric utilities. With 239,000 customers and approximately $600 million in assets, the company is one of the largest electricity distributors in Ontario, providing electricity and related services in Hamilton and St. Catharines. Like all electricity distributors in Ontario, Horizon Utilities is regulated by the Ontario Energy Board with respect to its customer charges and conditions of service.
The strategic focus of Horizon Utilities is being the best performing company in its sector, an aspiration that is already recognized on several fronts. Among its many recent distinctions, Horizon Utilities became the first utility to be designated “Sustainable Electricity Company” by the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) and, as well, won the Environmental Excellence award from the Electricity Distributors Association in 2013. The company was named “Sustainability Company of the Year” by the CEA in both 2011 and 2012. Horizon Utilities was also selected as one of the Top 10 Employers in Hamilton-Niagara in both 2012 and 2013 by the authors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, recognizing the excellent working conditions and career options for employees.
Horizon Utilities is the for-profit regulated business of the Horizon Group of Companies, where Horizon Holdings Inc. also owns and operates Horizon Solar Corporation and Horizon Energy Solutions Inc. (HESI). Horizon Solar is a commercial rooftop solar-photovoltaic generation business and HESI is a commercial sales and marketing-based organization that delivers energy solutions to mid- to large tiered businesses. Horizon Holdings is owned, respectively, by holding companies of the cities of Hamilton and St. Catharines. The Director of Corporate Communications role resides in Horizon Utilities, but also provides communications for all of the Horizon Group of Companies.
