Company History
Host Hotels & Resorts was founded in 1927 as a rootbeer stand in Washington, D.C. by J. Willard and Alice Marriott. Originally founded as The Hot Shoppe, the company expanded to airline catering in 1937 and purchased its first hotel in 1957. The name wasn't changed to the Marriott Corporation until 1967. In 1993 the Marriott Corporation split into two separate companies - Marriott International and Host Marriott (the historic company). Marriott International became a hotel management company and Host Marriott became a hotel owner and operator of airport concessions. In 1996, Host Marriott divided into two companies - Host Marriott an owner of real estate and lodging - and Host Marriott Services an operator of airport, rest stop, and entertainment concessions. On January 1, 1999 Host Marriott becomes a real estate investment trust and later changes its name to Host Hotels & Resorts in 2006 to reflect the diverse brands owned by the company.
