Company History
Today, our academic medical center serves our state, nation and world through advanced clinical care, path-breaking research on human health and disease, and a broad range of biomedical education.
We stand on the shoulders of those who came before – all the way back to the founders of our Medical School in 1848, and the opening of the nation’s first university-owned hospital in 1869.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
U.S. News and World Report annually evaluates hospitals for its Best Hospitals list by rating high-quality patient care, commitment to patient safety, clinical resources, family centeredness and other measures. For 2021-22, the University of Michigan’s hospitals were among the nation’s very best hospitals, putting us on the Honor Roll, and once again the number one hospital in Michigan.
In addition, Michigan Medicine is one of only seven hospitals in the nation – and the only one in Michigan – to be evaluated as “High Performing” in all 17 procedures and conditions evaluated by U.S. News & World Report.
