A history of breaking new ground.
Porter Novelli invented social marketing nearly four decades ago. Today, we’re still pioneering new ways for public relations to deliver powerful results that help drive success for organizations like yours.
Back in 1972…
Porter Novelli was founded in Washington, D.C. on the revolutionary idea that the creative, strategic marketing approaches used in the commercial sector could and should be applied to help nonprofit organizations improve public health and address social issues.
With our first major U.S. client - the National Institutes of Health - we created the National High Blood Pressure Education Program. And over the next 25 years, we worked together to improve an entire nation’s cardiovascular health.
From those early days, Porter Novelli grew to become the premier social marketing agency, creating such famous programs in the U.S. as the Food Pyramid, the 5 A Day campaign and the Truth youth anti-tobacco campaign.
And for the next 25 years…
Porter Novelli expanded across the United States, steadily adding to its portfolio of clients and expertise, including consumer products, pharmaceuticals, corporate and public affairs and - through the acquisition of Copithorne & Bellows – technology.
As part of Omnicom (NYSE:OMC) and its family of marketing companies, we also expanded beyond the United States to forge a global network that began with the acquisition of Countrywide, a leading public relations firm in the United Kingdom.
Acquisitions in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, a successful start-up in France that recently won nationwide Agency-of-the-Year honors, plus integration of other Omnicom-owned public relations firms from Israel to the United Arab Emirates, have established Porter Novelli as a leader across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
We joined with other Omnicom-owned public relations agencies and brand partners to create the strongest public relations presence in the Asia Pacific region. And in the Americas, acquisitions in Mexico, Canada and Argentina anchored a group of long-term brand partners that have made Porter Novelli a leader in the Americas.
As we grew, our vision to become the first truly multinational, multicultural public relations firm capable of delivering best-in-class service to clients in all major world markets began to take shape. In 1996, we officially established our brand globally, uniting a group of owned businesses and partners under a common brand and values, offering consistent, high-quality service to multinational clients.

Porter Novelli today is one of the world’s top public relations firms, helping clients in 60 countries achieve their business goals in the commercial, government and not-for-profit sectors. With employees working in nearly 100 cities, ours is a collaborative culture that brings together diverse disciplines, experiences, cultures and perspectives to produce singular results.
We manage more than a dozen global programs for clients such as Wyeth, Gillette, Qualcomm and Dow, coordinating global and regional strategy and execution.
